1. Starting May, ISRO to launch
a string of ‘defence’ satellites
- Between now and early 2020,
the space above Indialooks set to see an unprecedented rush of satellites
- Starting May, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) plans to send up at least eight earth observation (EO) satellites.
- Communication satellite GSAT32 is also in the offing next year to replace GSAT6A
- HysIS, launched in November; MicrosatR in January; and the EMISAT sent into orbit on April 1 are all for what is called “strategic use”.
2. Retired HC judge to head T.N. Lokayukta
- Judicial and non-judicial members also appointed to the anti-corruption body.
- The Governor has appointed retired High Court judge P. Devadass as the chairperson of the fivemember Lokayukta.
- Former district judges K. Jayabalan and R. Krishnamoorthy are the two judicial members and retired IAS officer M. Rajaram and advocate K. Arumugam are the two nonjudicial members of the anticorruption body.
- The chairperson and the members shall hold office for five years from the day they enter office or the date on which they attain the age of 70 years, whichever is earlier
3. Manufacturing PMI at 6-month low.
- Manufacturing activity slowed to a sixmonth low of 52.6 in March due to lower levels of new orders and production, according to a private sector survey.
4. TVS Motor twowheeler sales rise 12% in FY19
- Two and threewheeler manufacturer TVS Motor Company reported a 12% growth in its 201819 twowheeler sales to 37.57 lakh units against 33.67 lakh units registered in the year.
5. Paytm gets SEBI nod to offer stock broking
- Paytm Money said that it had received approval from the Securities and Exchange Board of India to offer stock broking service to its users.
6. Indonesia to raise imports from India
- Indonesia is looking at increasing sugar, rice and bovine imports from India.
- Total exports from Indonesia to India last year were to the tune of $13.72 billion and exports from India were to the tune of $5.01 billion.
7. Ultimate Kho Kho League announced
- The Ultimate Kho Kho League, featuring eight teams consisting of national and international players and played on a double roundrobin league format, has been proposed
- Kho Kho is played in every school in rural areas. It is a game that does not require any equipment. You only need speed and agility.
- The game is in the process of getting into the Asian Games.
8. Vikram Patel wins global health award
- Vikram Patel, a psychiatrist and professor of global health at Harvard Medical School, has won the prestigious John Dirks Canada Gairdner Global Health Award.
- Laureates receive a $100,000 cash honorarium and will be formally presented with their awards on October 24, 2019 at the annual Canada Gairdner Awards Gala in Toronto.
